Celebrate Healthy Aging Month in Kansas
September is national Healthy Aging Month and Kansas Elder Care has a few ideas for how to celebrate:
- Start taking daily walks. Fall is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful Kansas weather. Start adding a morning or evening walk to your daily schedule. Just 30 minutes a day will make a huge impact on your overall wellbeing. Looking for a great walking spot outside your neighborhood? Try the Overland Park Arboretum or the Flint Hills Nature Trail.
- Find a new hobby. It’s never too late to learn a new instrument, discover your inner artist, take up gardening, refresh your tennis skills or keep a journal. Need help getting started? Consider taking a fall class at your nearest community center or college.
- Experiment with new healthy recipes. A healthy, balanced diet is essential for aging well. Healthyaging.net has several recipe ideas that are ideal for the fall season. Try the Orzo with Roasted Vegetables, Feta Cheese and Pine Nuts, Honeyed Pecan Salad with Tangerine Vinaigrette or the South African Spiced Roast Pork Stew.
- Take a vacation. According to the Global Coalition on Aging, travel is very good for the health of aging seniors! Mentally, there are many benefits to travel, whether you’re promoting relaxation by lounging on a beach or increasing cognitive stimulation by exploring new destinations, visiting museums and learning about new cultures. Generally, we all feel a bit happier and more refreshed after a great vacation. Physically, travel often promotes more walking and activity than our day-to-day lives. Plus, research has found that regular participation in social or leisure activities, like travel, can lower the risk of dementia.
