Celebrate Healthy Aging Month in Kansas

September is national Healthy Aging Month and Kansas Elder Care has a few ideas for how to celebrate:

  • Start taking daily walks. Fall is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful Kansas weather. Start adding a morning or evening walk to your daily schedule. Just 30 minutes a day will make a huge impact on your overall wellbeing. Looking for a great walking spot outside your neighborhood? Try the Overland Park Arboretum  or the Flint Hills Nature Trail.
  • Find a new hobby. It’s never too late to learn a new instrument, discover your inner artist, take up gardening, refresh your tennis skills or keep a journal. Need help getting started? Consider taking a fall class at your nearest community center or college.
  • Experiment with new healthy recipes. A healthy, balanced diet is essential for aging well. Healthyaging.net has several recipe ideas that are ideal for the fall season.   • Take a vacation. According to the Global Coalition on Aging, travel is very good for the health of aging seniors! Generally, we all feel a bit happier and more refreshed after a great vacation. Physically, travel often promotes more walking and activity than our day-to-day lives. Plus, research has found that regular participation in social or leisure activities, like travel, can lower the risk of dementia.
